We are Vanajeros: four professional photographers and filmmakers, driving our VW camper-van through Mexico, Central and South America. Our project’s aim is to capture images of people and places that usually elude tourists and travelers, while giving something back to the communities we visit.
We will do this by outfitting our 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon as a mobile photographic studio—one we can use to print off the photographic portraits we make so we can give them immediately back to the families and communities we encounter. We want to visually explore, as well as give back to the communities we pass through, and to the people we meet.
Family is an extremely valued and cherished part of Latin American culture, yet many families and individuals can’t afford to have photographs of loved ones. We want to make these images accessible by putting as many photographs into as many people’s hands as we can.
Through our journey, through these portraits, and through our lenses, we will explore different cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic enclaves that are not listed in the travel guides. Our project will create dynamic cultural exchange with the individuals and communities we hope to connect with on our journey from North America to South America.
